If you are a parent wondering whether the Young Marines is the right fit for your child, you are probably really asking a few deeper questions, will this help my kid become more confident, more respectful, and more responsible, and will they actually enjoy it, as a Training Officer, a combat veteran, and a dad with two boys in the program who love it, I can honestly say this program is built for families asking exactly those questions.
The Young Marines is a national youth organization for ages 8 to 18 that uses a Marine Corps style structure to teach leadership, discipline, and character, it is not a recruiting program and it is not only for kids who want to join the military, it is designed for any young person who needs structure, positive role models, and a place to be challenged and supported as they grow, if you want your child to learn to show up on time, follow through on commitments, and take pride in their effort, this program is a strong fit.
As the Training Officer my role is to plan and run the training that helps our youth develop real world skills, things like responsibility, teamwork, follow through, and confidence under pressure, as a combat veteran I bring my experience with leadership, standards, and accountability, but I focus on how those lessons translate to regular life, school, sports, and eventually work, if you want your child to learn from adults who hold high standards but genuinely care about their growth, this program will feel right to you.
One of the biggest worries I hear from parents is that this is just for kids who want to go into the military, that is not true, we build leaders for any profession, future doctors, teachers, mechanics, small business owners, engineers, first responders, and so many other paths, we use military style organization and customs because they provide a clear framework, ranks, responsibilities, uniforms, and standards, but the goal is to help kids learn how to carry themselves with confidence, communicate clearly, follow and give instructions, and take ownership of their actions, some Young Marines eventually decide they want to serve in the armed forces but a lot do not, they take what they learned here and apply it to college, trades, business, and everyday adult life.
I trust this program enough to put my own family into it, both of my boys are Young Marines and they genuinely enjoy it, they look forward to drill nights, special events, and camps, they have made friends, learned to push through tough moments, and taken pride in earning rank and awards instead of just getting things handed to them, if you want your child to feel proud of earning what they achieve instead of expecting everything for free, this program supports that.
At home I have watched my boys grow more disciplined and more responsible, they are more comfortable speaking up, helping others, and stepping into leadership roles, when they put on their Young Marines uniforms they understand they are representing something bigger than themselves, and that sense of pride carries over into school, sports, and how they act around family and friends, if you want your child to understand respect, not just be told to show it, the culture of this program helps make that real.
Discipline in the Young Marines comes from clear expectations, consistent standards, and earned rewards, kids learn to be on time and prepared, to keep their uniforms and gear in order, to listen carefully and follow instructions, and to finish what they start even when it is hard, respect is built into everything, Young Marines learn to address adults properly, work with peers they might not normally spend time with, and show respect for the flag, the community, and themselves, over time that respect becomes a habit, the way they talk to teachers, how they treat family members, and how they handle conflict.
So, is this program right for your kid? Yes, if you are looking for, a structured environment instead of chaos, clear rules and expectations, adults who coach, mentor, and hold the line, a place where your child can fail safely, learn, and try again, a community that talks about honor, courage, and commitment and also lives it, this program is not about turning kids into soldiers, it is about helping them become the kind of adults others can trust, follow, and rely on, no matter what path they choose, if those are the outcomes you want for your child, then yes, the Young Marines is likely a very good fit.
